In Mark 3:25, Jesus tells His disciples, "If a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand." (Another famous carpenter, Abraham Lincoln, quoted the verse in an 1858 campaign speech against slavery, but the carpenter from Nazareth said it first.) Divided is where the House of Representatives stands right now.

As of this writing, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), the House Minority Leader for the 117th Congress, has lost his ninth vote for Speaker of the House. C-SPAN is currently broadcasting the 10th vote "live." (Go here to watch.) But the 21 GOP Representatives opposed to handing McCarthy the Speaker's gavel haven't moved. They're STILL preventing him from reaching the 218 votes he needs to lead the 118th Congress.

This afternoon's ninth Speaker vote was the most in 100 years, when the 68th Congress elected Frederick Gillett, a Republican from Massachusetts, in 1923. The House is still a long way from its record of 133 Speaker votes. Nathaniel Banks, also of Massachusetts, was finally elected after two months of elections that took place between December 3, 1855 and February 2, 1856 -- which, ironically enough, is Groundhog Day.

If you think the current GOP battle in the House is starting to feel like the 1993 film "Groundhog Day" that starred Bill Murray, you're not alone.
