In February 2016, Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan wrote "Trump and the Rise of the Unprotected." The article would help the former Ronald Reagan speech writer win a Pulitzer Prize for Commentary a year later. Noonan wrote brilliantly about "the protected and the unprotected." Here's an excerpt:

The protected are the accomplished, the secure, the successful—those who have power or access to it. They are protected from much of the roughness of the world. More to the point, they are protected from the world they have created. ...

Because they are protected they feel they can do pretty much anything, impose any reality. They’re insulated from many of the effects of their own decisions. ...

It was good for the protected. But the unprotected watched and saw. They realized the protected were not looking out for them, and they inferred that they were not looking out for the country, either.

The unprotected came to think they owed the establishment—another word for the protected—nothing, no particular loyalty, no old allegiance.

Mr. Trump came from that.

Four years ago, one of the greatest perceived threats to the American way of life was illegal immigration. It wasn't an imminent danger to every person's health and well-being. But the fear over our southern border being infiltrated by thousands of undocumented outsiders and possible criminals was very real. Ultimately, it became a big enough concern that We the People elected Donald J. Trump as our nation's 45th president.

Now, fast forward to 2020 and to what IS an immediate threat to hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of Americans in Democrat-run cities. Violent protests, rioting and looting have not only become commonplace, verbal and physical assaults are intensifying. What's worse is that the so-called leaders in the communities most affected by the chaos and destruction don't even seem to care.

Since 2016, the threat to the "unprotected" has moved from someone else's backyard along the California, Arizona or Texas border to many Americans' front sidewalks, stoops, porches and yards. That's why we think the riots -- not the economy, COVID or any other issue -- will decide who wins the 2020 election. The actions of BLM and Antifa activists could very well fan the flames for another Trump victory, unless Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden takes meaningful steps to condemn and stop the violence.
