UPDATE: Thursday, August 31 @ 2:00 p.m. ET

George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley has weighed in on the "Don't Tread On Me" Gadsden Flag controversy in Colorado Springs. The legal scholar and FOX News contributor had this to say on his blog yesterday:

Not only is the flag a historical image originally unconnected to slavery, but the action (in my view) contravenes core free speech protections. The flag was designed by Christopher Gadsden of South Carolina in 1775 as a symbol of the defiance of colonists to British rule. (Some trace the origins of the flag earlier to a design by Benjamin Franklin). Featuring a timber snake, it affirmed the view of the colonists that they would not be stepped on by overbearing British officials and troops. ...

For the revolutionaries, it embodied the essence of the war: they were the victims of the British overstepping their authority and treading upon the rights of the colonies. The historic image is still cherished by many, including those who see it as a symbol of defiance of individual citizens to overreaching government action. ... It is an ironic moment for a flag that symbolized the resistance to overbearing government actions and the denial of core rights in the American Revolution.

Grassfire agrees with Turley 100%, which is why we're offering our team members the opportunity to purchase either a full-size (3' x 5') Gadsden Flag or our "Don't Tread On Me" ReStickers. Wednesday evening:

We've told you repeatedly that America's historic "Don't Tread On Me" Gadsden Flag is the banner radical, unhinged leftists hate the most. They proved it again recently in Colorado Springs. A 12-year-old charter-school student was booted from class for refusing to remove a Gadsden-flag patch from his backpack. FOX News reports:

An employee for the school said via email that the patch was "disruptive to the classroom environment" and has "origins with slavery."

The Gadsden flag originates from the American Revolution as a symbol of the 13 colonies’ fight against British tyrannical rule.

Patriots Christopher Gadsden and Benjamin Franklin came up with the idea to use a coiled, timber rattler as a symbol of colonial resistance. This bold flag of American freedom quickly became a symbol of independence. The first "Don't Tread On Me!" banners were used by the Continental Marines during the Revolutionary War. Order yours now.

+ + Tell The Radical, Unhinged Left: "Don't Tread On Me"!

Nearly 250 years later, Gadsden's banner still flies high as an icon of liberty -- unless you're a 12-year-old patriot in a Colorado Springs charter school. Thankfully, the school board did some research and backtracked on their decision. They released a statement this week that read, in part:

The Vanguard School recognizes the historical significance of the Gadsden Flag and its place in history. This incident is an occasion for us to reaffirm our deep commitment to a classical education and support of these American principles.
