Pro-democracy demonstrators and police squared off again in Hong Kong over the weekend. Protests that began four months ago have become more violent recently.

The Wall Street Journal reports that, on Saturday, "Protesters threw Molotov cocktails and police fired tear gas and made several arrests. ... The march in the Tuen Mun neighborhood, which was approved by authorities, started peacefully as thousands walked down a main street, with some waving flags from the U.S. and other democratic countries. At one point, however, protesters gathered at an intersection along the route to yell at nearby riot police, who eventually charged to disperse the crowd."

According to The New York Post: "Pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong set massive street fires, trashed two subway stations and trampled the Chinese flag Sunday. ... Demonstrators have faced off with authorities since June over alleged attempts by the Chinese government to stifle freedoms that Hong Kong was promised when the British handed the former colony to China in 1997."

While Grassfire doesn't condone violence, we do support the protestors' peaceful efforts to demand and gain independence from China. The Journal says some demonstrators blame law enforcement for the increased violence. But regardless of who's responsible, a peaceful resolution should be everyone's goal.
