The meaning of the "Appeal To Heaven" flag can be traced back to the 1690 book Second Treatise of Government. Author John Locke wrote: "And where the body of the people, or any single man, is deprived of their right, or is under the exercise of a power without right, and have no appeal on earth, then they have a liberty to appeal to heaven."

But it took another 82 years for the "Pine Tree" flag to become a reality. Shortly before the Revolutionary War in 1772, Britain's "Timber for the Navy Act" allowed the King to take an unlimited number of white pine trees from the colonies for ship masts and booms.

Angry colonists reacted by staging New Hampshire's infamous "Pine Tree Riot." It occurred one year before the Boston Tea Party and three years before the Battles of Lexington and Concord. These banners served as a warning to Colonial America against government overreach. More than 250 years later, "Appeal To Heaven" STILL represents resistance to tyranny, desire for independence and America's reliance on God.
