After four hours of debate, one Republican Senator changed his vote on whether or not the impeachment trial of President Trump is constitutional. Day 1 of the sham proceedings saw Senators vote 56 to 44 that this third witch hunt of America's 45th president is somehow justified by the U.S. Constitution -- even though the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court has refused to preside, which is mandated in Article 1, Section 3, Clause 6 of that founding document.

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) was the lone flip-flop Republican. For some reason, he changed his vote yesterday after voting on January 26 that the trial was unconstitutional. (Maybe he wants to be able to tell his constituents, "I voted against the trial before I voted for it.") In a statement, Cassidy claimed, "The House managers had much stronger constitutional arguments. The president's team did not."

With all due respect, reading and adhering to the Constitution should be preferred over listening to and being swayed by partisan voices. The Louisiana Republican sided with EVERY Democrat Senator and the usual cast of RINOs in refusing to support President Trump. Those NeverTrumpers included Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Mitt Romney (R-UT), Ben Sasse (R-NE) and Pat Toomey (R-PA). But even if all six of those GOP Senators vote to convict, which isn't guaranteed, Democrats still need 11 more Republicans to change their minds.

The fact is that, if the 44 Republicans who voted against the impeachment trial yesterday stay united, Senate Dems have no chance of convicting President Trump. Moving forward on the House's bogus impeachment charge of "incitement of insurrection" shows that these proceedings are nothing more than useless, partisan political theater. The apparent goal is to vilify President Trump and further divide America.

Yesterday, 88% of GOP Senators (44 out of 50) stood with President Trump against this unconstitutional impeachment trial. Democrats need an additional 11 Republicans to change their minds for a conviction, which is HIGHLY unlikely -- but not guaranteed.
