This morning, we heard from House GOP leadership that a censure vote on Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) "could happen as soon as today." Waters has been widely criticized by Republicans for volatile statements she made in Minnesota on Saturday night. Speaking about the George Floyd murder trial, the California Democrat called for protesters to "stay on the street," "fight for justice" and "get more confrontational" if former policeman Derek Chauvin was found not guilty of murder and manslaughter.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) introduced H.R.331 this afternoon to censure Waters, but the resolution was "tabled" by Democrats along a strict party-line vote of 216 to 210. However, the Congresswoman's "dangerous comments" (as McCarthy called them) could have incited people to violence if Chauvin had NOT been found guilty on all counts.

Yesterday, the former police officer's defense team requested a mistrial based on Waters' statements. While denying the motion, trial Judge Peter Cahill said, "Congresswoman Waters may have given you something on appeal that may result in this whole trial being overturned." (The same judge announced the guilty verdicts shortly after 5:00 p.m. ET today.)
