Something very important came out of the recent government shutdown...
A small band of conservatives, led by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna,
threatened to vote NO and block the entire deal unless the SAVE America Act (to safeguard our elections) was added to the spending bills.
Luna and others backed away from their demands (we wish they hadn't) but in the process, a new path forward emerged for President Trump and conservatives to defeat the Democrats' filibuster "stranglehold" in the Senate on the SAVE America Act and a host of other MAGA priorities.
+ + Bypassing the "Zombie" Filibuster
As you know, the threat of a filibuster means 60 votes are needed to advance legislation in the Senate. I say "threat" because Senators NEVER actually filibuster! They only do what we are now calling a "Zombie" Filibuster
(because, like zombies, Senators in the minority don't have to actually say anything to block legislation!).
Led by Sen Mike Lee, conservatives began asserting that all Senate Republicans needed to do was return the Senate to the historic "Standing" filibuster that was used for about 150 years. In a Standing filibuster, the minority party can slow or stop a bill only as long as they can CONTINUOUSLY give speeches on the Senate floor (that's what a filibuster actually is, as we explain in more detail here).
+ + Thune pulled the rug but forgot about the cat...
Luna stated that she was given a commitment that the SAVE America Act would be brought to the Senate floor with a "Standing" Filibuster. But almost immediately, Thune said no such commitment had been made.
So they secured Luna's vote, passed the spending bill, and then pulled the rug out from under her (and you and me).
Unfortunately for Thune and GOP Senate leaders (who actually prefer the "Zombie" filibuster as we explain), they may have pulled the rug but THE CAT IS OUT OF THE BAG!
That's because no new laws or difficult Senate rule changes are needed to revert to the historic Standing filibuster.
Thune and GOP Senate leaders have ZERO EXCUSES to not bring the SAVE America Act to the Senate floor and force the Democrats to exhaust themselves (for days if necessary) opposing an issue that has an over 80% approval in all surveys.
Some zombies are hard to kill. Not this one. All it takes is a little bit of courage by Senate GOP leadership (and a lot of pressure from MAGA patriots!).
Which brings us to why I'm writing to you today...
As noted above, GOP Senate leaders like their nice, safe, "Zombie" filibuster. The only way they will take the steps needed to save our nation, including passing the SAVE America Act, by re-instituting the Standing filibuster is if they hear from patriots like you.
So here are two things you can do if you want GOP Senate leaders to kill the zombie...
