Back in March, the House of Representatives passed H.R.1, the "For the People Act of 2021." Every Republican and one Democrat voted against it. NBC News calls H.R.1 "a sweeping bill that seeks to change campaign finance, voting and ethics laws." While that may be true, Republicans say the legislation is an attempt to ENGINEER future election results in favor of Democrats.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) insists the bill (known as S.1 in the Upper Chamber) is "a one-party takeover of our political system" and "a partisan power-grab" that would attack free speech, privacy rights "and even send public funds directly to politicians!"

Attorneys General in 20 states have already threatened to sue the federal government if the "For the People Act of 2021" is signed into law. In a March letter to McConnell, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), they wrote:

"The Act takes a one-sided approach to governing and usurps states' authority over elections. ... Around the nation, the 2020 general elections generated mass confusion and distrust — problems that the Act would only exacerbate. Should the Act become law, we will seek legal remedies to protect the Constitution, the sovereignty of all states, our elections, and the rights of our citizens."
