The late, great President Ronald Reagan spoke the above memorable words at the Republican National Convention on October 27, 1964. That quote was part of his "A Time for Choosing" speech. According to the late President's official website:
Reagan delivered the address while the country was grappling with the threat of Communism and other foreign adversaries, all while civil rights and other domestic issues were taking center stage at home. With his Freedom Speech, Reagan sought to unify the American people around the shared common goal of pursuing freedom, which he emphasized wasn’t a guarantee.
For more than 55 years, "The Freedom Speech," as it's also known, has reminded Americans that our rights and liberties come with a responsibility and at a price. Today, in the United States, freedom is under attack by leftists who want to undermine our religious freedom, our right to keep and bear arms, our freedom to peaceably assemble and even our freedom of speech.
You can see it in the headlines and in the platforms and speeches of every Democrat candidate for president in 2020. They call for ... no, they demand Americans conform to their views on abortion, homosexuality, transgenderism, gun control, taxes, government spending and so many other issues. That kind of thinking would turn us in the "Socialist (or worse "Fascist) States of America"! But that doesn't seem to bother them one bit.
Just look at what the "progressive" Left is doing to President Trump. Ever since he was elected three years ago, they've been committed to doing whatever they can to de-rail his agenda and even remove him from office. Just this past week, House Democrats viciously and relentlessly attacked our Commander-in-Chief on the Senate floor, calling him a "dictator" and a "cheat," over what boils down to foreign policy agreements and the constitutional powers of the presidency.
The Democrats are actively trying to overthrow the results of a free and fair election -- just because they lost! Hopefully, they'll continue to lose for as long as their radical, far-left agenda threatens the freedom of every citizen. Their agenda expands government and reduces liberty. That's not what the founders intended. Reagan could see that in 1964, and his "Freedom Speech" has reminded us ever since.
