On September 26, the Christian flag will be 128 years old. While many believers and non-believers instantly recognize the tri-colored banner, it's history isn't widely known. Grassfire wants to change that, starting today.
The Christian flag was first conceived by Charles Overton in 1897,
during a Sunday school class at Brighton Chapel on Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. But it took 10 years and the assistance of Ralph Diffendorfer to settle on the current design and to begin promoting the banner. According to Christianity·com:
Since its adoption by the Federal Council of Churches in 1942, it has been used by congregations of many Christian traditions, including Anglican, Baptist, Lutheran, Mennonite, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Reformed, among others.
The Christian flag has a white field, with a red Latin cross within a blue canton. The tint of red on the cross signifies the blood of Christ shed at Calvary. The blue symbolizes the waters of baptism as well as the devotion of Jesus. The white illustrates Jesus' purity and holiness.
