A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers say TikTiok's ability to collect user data poses serious national-security and privacy risks. In a recent Twitter post, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) reacted to last month's congressional testimony from the video-sharing app's CEO, Shou Zi Chew:

It's very concerning that the CEO of TikTok can't be honest and admit what we already know to be true — China has access to TikTok user data. The House will be moving forward with legislation to protect Americans from the technological tentacles of the Chinese Communist Party.

That legislation is called the "RESTRICT Act," and critics call it "the Patriot Act on steroids" because of it's threat to free speech. Many Americans think a ban on TikTok is a good idea, especially since the video-sharing app has ties to China's government. The social-media program's parent company won't deny that it shares user data with the Chinese Communist Party.

But is the "RESTRICT Act" the right way for Congress to ban TikTok? Critics say the legislation threatens millions of Americans' free-speech rights. They call the bill: "Orwellian," a "Trojan horse" and "the Patriot Act on steroids."

FOX News host Tucker Carlson says the bill to ban TikTok will grant Congress "terrifying new powers." On a recent edition of "Tucker Carlson Tonight," he noted some of the threats posed by the popular photo-sharing app. But Carlson also warned of a hidden agenda in the RESTRICT Act:

Instead, this bill would give enormous and terrifying new powers to the federal government to punish American citizens and regulate how they communicate with one another."
