+ + The Miracle Of Squanto, "A Special Instrument Sent of God"
One of the most fascinating elements of the Thanksgiving story is the role of Squanto, the Patuxet Indian who was taken into slavery by British traders. Yet God used the hardship and injustice of that time of slavery to teach Squanto the English language and spare him from a plague that wiped out his entire Patuxet tribe. In 1620, the Pilgrims were blown off course and "coincidentally" would land in the precise spot where Squanto's decimated tribe once lived, creating a safe landing spot for their company.
After a winter in which half the Pilgrims died, they were introduced to Squanto who would live the rest of his life with the Pilgrims, serve as their translator and guide them on how to survive in the New World. Gov. William Bradford called Squanto "a special instrument sent of God for their good beyond their expectation. He showed them how to plant corn, where to take fish and other commodities, and guided them to unknown places, and never left them till he died."
