+ + What Makes The Colonial-Era "Appeal To Heaven" Flag So Special?
The white pine on the "Appeal To Heaven" flag warned early Americans against the overreach of the government. George Washington, Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, flew the flag in October 1775, as "a symbol of solidarity, conviction and encouragement to fight for liberty." In chapter 14 of his 1690 book, Second Treatise of Government, author John Locke wrote:
"And where the body of the people, or any single man, is deprived of their right, or is under the exercise of a power without right, and have no appeal on earth, then they have a liberty to appeal to heaven" (emphasis ours).
